Lesser Calamint is a PERENNIAL flowering plant growing to 60cm. It forms a compact mounding plant and has fragrant green oregano-like leaves and pink flowers. It attracts honeybees and butterflies. It grows in any well-drained soil in a full sun position, and can grow in very alkaline soils.
Leaves have a fragrance of oregano and mint and are used as food flavouring or tea and the plant has some historic medicinal use.
Named nepitella in Italy it is commonly used as a condiment. Medicinal actions include it being aromatic, diaphoretic, expectorant, febrifuge and stomachic. An infusion can be useful for flatulent colic, depression, insomnia and painful menstruation. Not to be given to pregnant women.
