Agastache – Apache Sunset

$8.50

Agastache ‘Apache Sunset’ (Agastache rupestris) is a perennial in the mint (Lamiaceae) family that grows to around 60–80cm tall and 45–60cm wide. It prefers full sun and grows best in well-drained, sandy or gravelly soils. It has silvery, aromatic foliage and long spikes of tubular orange-sunset flowers that are highly attractive to bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Agastache ‘Apache Sunset’ is used as a pollinator-friendly cottage garden flower and is excellent as a cut flower. In New Zealand it is hardy to light frosts but may need protection in colder or wetter regions where drainage is poor.

Description

Agastache ‘Apache Sunset’ is one of the most ornamental of the hyssops, valued for both its unique flower colour and anise-scented foliage. Native to the arid regions of New Mexico and Arizona, it thrives in well-drained, sandy or gravelly soils and sunny positions, making it ideal for xeriscaping, low-water gardens, or sunny borders where other perennials might struggle.

Its spikes of tubular orange flowers open over a long season from mid-summer through autumn, blending beautifully with warm-toned perennials. The nectar-rich blooms are irresistible to pollinators and will keep your garden buzzing with life. The foliage releases a pleasant herbal fragrance when touched, adding to its sensory appeal.

Though drought tolerant once established, good drainage is essential for overwinter survival, particularly in wetter parts of New Zealand. While it can handle light frosts, in colder regions it benefits from winter mulching or positioning in a sheltered microclimate.

An excellent choice for cutting gardens, herbaceous borders, wildflower-style plantings, and pollinator-friendly gardens.
