Description
Ajuga reptans, commonly called Bugleweed, is a versatile evergreen groundcover much valued for its colourful foliage, dense spreading habit, and attractive spring flower spikes. Native to Europe, it belongs to the mint family (Lamiaceae), though unlike its relatives, it spreads horizontally via runners to form carpets of foliage that suppress weeds and hold soil.
In spring, Ajuga produces upright flower spikes (10–15 cm tall) in shades ranging from blue to pink depending on the variety, loved by bees and pollinators. The foliage is equally decorative, with cultivars ranging from deep burgundy to variegated cream-and-green, making it a useful landscaping plant for borders, pathways, woodland gardens, and cottage-style plantings.
Ajuga prefers moist, well-drained soils in sun or part shade, though it tolerates a wide range of conditions once established. It is excellent under trees or in tricky areas where grass won’t grow. Hardy throughout New Zealand.
