Artichoke – Green Globe

$9.50

Globe Artichoke (Cynara cardunculus var. scolymus ‘Green Globe’) is a perennial in the Asteraceae family that grows in full sun and prefers rich, well-drained soil. It is cultivated for its large green flower buds, which are eaten as a gourmet vegetable, and adds striking architectural form to the garden.

Description

The globe artichoke (Cynara scolymus) is a dramatic, architectural perennial with silvery, thistle-like foliage and tall flower stalks bearing large, scaly buds. The edible part is the immature flower bud, harvested before it opens, with fleshy bases to the scales and a tender heart that is considered a delicacy in Mediterranean cuisine. If left to bloom, the buds open into spectacular purple thistle-like flowers that attract pollinators and add striking ornament to the garden.

Artichokes thrive in rich, well-drained soil and full sun, with consistent moisture during growth. Plants can live for several years, producing their best harvests in the second and third seasons. In colder climates they are often grown as annuals. Both beautiful and useful, artichokes are at home in the vegetable patch, herb garden, or even the ornamental border.
