Chamomile – Roman

$7.50

Roman Chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile) is a perennial in the Asteraceae family. It prefers full sun, free-draining sandy or loamy soils, and is hardy in NZ. It grows to 15–30 cm tall and spreads up to 30 cm, with finely divided green leaves and small, sweetly scented daisy-like flowers. Mainly used as a medicinal herb (gentle calming tea and digestive aid), as a cottage garden plant (fragrant groundcover), and as a lawn or path edging plant (soft, low, and aromatic underfoot).

Description

Roman Chamomile is a low-growing perennial herb with finely divided, aromatic foliage and cheerful white daisy flowers with yellow centres. Native to Western Europe, it thrives in sunny, well-drained spots, making a lovely edging plant, groundcover, or informal lawn alternative in light foot-traffic areas. The flowers and leaves are traditionally used in teas, oils, and compresses for their soothing, anti-inflammatory, and calming properties. Roman Chamomile is especially prized for its fragrance, releasing a sweet apple-like scent when crushed underfoot. More compact and perennial than German Chamomile, it provides a longer-lived option for medicinal and ornamental gardens.
