Echinacea – Lustre Hybrids

Echinacea purpurea ‘Lustre Hybrids’ is a perennial in the daisy (Asteraceae) family that grows to around 60–90 cm tall and 45–60 cm wide. It prefers full sun and moist but well-drained soils. It has a vibrant range of petal colours, creating enchanting tones in the garden. ‘Lustre Hybrids’ attract pollinators, and are prized in cottage and cut flower gardens. Hardy in most NZ climates.

All Echinacea species and cultivars can be used medicinally, though angustifolia, pallida, and purpurea are most traditionally valued for their potency. Lustre Hybrids can be used, but are less commonly chosen in professional practice.

Description

The ‘Lustre Hybrids’ are a mixed strain of Echinacea purpurea offering blooms in a vibrant range of pinks, purples, and sometimes deeper magentas. Plants are strong, hardy perennials, flowering generously through summer. Their varied colours from pink, magenta and purple, white, yellow and oranges, bring a dynamic, natural look to borders and wildlife gardens, while still being useful as cut flowers. Like other echinacea, they are sun-loving, resilient, and excellent for pollinators.
