Feverfew : seeds

A flowering PERENNIAL plant in the daisy family growing to 60cm. The small bush has pungently scented light green to yellowish-green leaves and daisy-like flowers.

It prefers well-drained soil in a full sun position and can tolerate somewhat strong winds. Mostly used as a medicinal herb, but the flowers and leaves have some culinary use.

Description

The dried flowers can be used as a flavouring and the plant imparts an aromatic bitter taste to certain foods.

As a medicinal herb, it is most reputed for soothing headaches, in particular migraines. It is also a well known antirheumatic. Leaves and flower heads are anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, aperient, bitter, carminative, emmenagogue, sedative, stimulant, stings, stomachic, vasodilator and vermifuge. It can also be used externally to bathe swollen feet, and to treat bruises.

Dried flowers are insecticidal (similar to Pyrethrum, which is obtained from Tanacetum cinerarifolium).
