Soapwort – common

Soapwort is a PERENNIAL growing to 1m. The unbranched stems have sessile leaves and sweetly-scented pink flowers.
Prefers moist, well-drained soil in full sun or semi-shade.
Mainly used as a cosmetic soap product.
Soapwort has many historical medicinal uses, but it is rarely used in modern herbalism due to its irritant effect on the gastrointestinal tract.
A soap can be obtained by boilin gthe whole plant (including the root) in water. A decoction of the whole plant can be applied externally to treat itchy skin.
It may be used as the base for herbal hair shampoo.
