Description

Tomatillo ‘Puebla’ (Physalis ixocarpa) is a dependable, traditional Mexican cultivar prized for producing plentiful, firm green husks ideal for classic salsa verde and cooking. Plants form vigorous, sprawling bushes that set abundant fruit inside papery lanterns; the fruits are typically firm and tangy, holding up well to roasting and preserving. Like other tomatillos it produces small yellow flowers with purple throats that attract bees, and crops best when grown in full sun with fertile, free-draining soil and warmth through the season. Tomatillos are self-incompatible — plant two or more cultivars for reliable pollination and the heaviest yields. In New Zealand they are frost-tender and are usually grown as a summer annual or protected in cooler districts.
