Description

Tomatillo ‘Queen of Malinalco’ (Physalis ixocarpa) is an heirloom Mexican variety valued by home growers for its reliable cropping and rich, well-balanced tomatillo flavour. The plants are vigorous and productive, forming abundant husked fruits that are wonderful for fresh salsas, cooked sauces, and canning. As with other tomatillos, they perform best in a warm, sunny site with fertile, well-drained soil and regular watering while fruit is forming. The flowers and later lanterns are useful for pollinators and add ornamental interest. Ensure multiple plants or mixed cultivars for good pollination — tomatillos are self-incompatible. In New Zealand they are frost-tender and are normally grown as summer annuals or in sheltered microclimates.
