Chilli – Cayenne (Capsicum annuum ‘Cayenne’)


Capsicum is a frost and cold tender EVERGREEN PERENNIAL that is often grown as an annual, reaching a height of 1m. Prefers growing in a moist well-drained soil in full sun. Cayenne has white flowers that are followed by long and thin pods that ripen from green to bright red and are hot (30,000 – 50,000 SHU). Eaten fresh, or dried and powdered, they are a common condiment and add pungency to soups, stews, curries, sauces, marinades etc.

Used fresh as a condiment or roasted, dried, or canned. Peppers are often used fresh in salads, or cooked into pasta sauces, marinades, made into hot sauces etc. They are very high in vitamin C and other vitamins and minerals making them highly nutritive. Cayenne has great therapeutic benefits, including its uses for heartburn, gout, fever, nausea, sore throat, colds, rheumatism and delirium. It is antiseptic, antifungal and antibacterial.
