Description

Tomatillo ‘Violet’ (Physalis ixocarpa) is a striking heirloom tomatillo variety producing medium-sized fruits encased in papery husks that mature to a deep purple-violet colour. Native to Mexico and a staple in Latin American cooking, tomatillos are essential for salsas, sauces, and roasted dishes, adding a tangy-sweet, slightly citrus flavour.

‘Violet’ thrives in full sun and fertile, well-drained soil. Plants are vigorous and sprawling, typically reaching 1–1.2 m tall and wide. They are self-incompatible, meaning at least two plants are needed for pollination and good fruit set. The fruits ripen as the husks dry and split, usually in late summer.

Besides their culinary uses, tomatillos are attractive garden plants, with delicate yellow flowers dotted with purple throats that draw in pollinators. ‘Violet’ adds both ornamental interest and vibrant flavour to the productive garden.
