Description

Aloe vera is one of the most widely recognised medicinal plants in the world. A tender, evergreen succulent, it forms rosettes of fleshy, lance-shaped leaves filled with a cooling gel. Mature plants may produce tall flower spikes with tubular yellow or orange blooms in summer, adding ornamental value as well as usefulness.

Traditionally revered in many cultures, Aloe vera is most famous for the gel within its leaves, which is used topically to:

  • Soothe burns, sunburn, and skin irritation

  • Promote wound healing

  • Moisturise and cool the skin

Internally, small amounts of the fresh gel are sometimes taken for digestion and immune support, but caution is advised: the yellow latex just under the leaf skin is a strong laxative and should not be consumed.

Aloe vera thrives in warm, sunny, and dry conditions. It does best in sandy or free-draining soil and is drought tolerant, making it a low-maintenance choice for gardens or containers. In cooler climates, it can be overwintered indoors.

With its combination of beauty, resilience, and healing properties, Aloe vera is a must-have for every herb grower’s collection.
