Chives – Common
$6.50Common Chives (Allium schoenoprasum) is a perennial herb in the Amaryllidaceae family. It prefers a sunny to partly shaded site with moist but well-drained soil and is hardy throughout New Zealand. It grows to about 30–45 cm tall in dense clumps, with hollow grass-like leaves and attractive purple pom-pom flowers. Used mainly as a culinary herb for its mild onion flavour, it is also valued as a pollinator plant and adds charm to cottage gardens.

$4.25A BULB that grows to 30cm, preferring a moist but well-drained soil and full sun or semi shade. Tolerates heavy clay. Chives have hollow stems (or scapes) up to 50cm and tubular leaves that are just slightly shorter than the scapes. The flowers are pale purple, and produced in a dense inflorescence.
Leaves with their mild onion flavour is used in cooking, either fresh, or cooked, or dried. Long history of nutritive healing.
