Prefers rich, moist soil in partial shade. Traditionally valued as a Medicinal Herb, Culinary Herb (candied stems, flavouring in liqueurs), and Cottage Garden/Apothecary plant. Hardy in New Zealand, self-seeds readily, and attracts pollinators.
