Black cumin (Nigella sativa) is an annual herb in the buttercup family (Ranunculaceae). It prefers a sunny, sheltered site with free-draining soil and tolerates dry conditions once established; in New Zealand it is best grown in spring–summer as it is frost-tender. Plants grow to around 30–50 cm tall and 20–30 cm wide, with feathery foliage, pale starry flowers, and distinctive inflated seed pods. Mainly used as a culinary plant, the black seeds add a warm, aromatic flavour to breads, curries, and spice blends. As a medicinal herb, they have a long history of use for digestion, immunity, and vitality. In the cottage garden, the flowers add delicate charm, while in the pollinator garden they provide nectar and habitat for bees and beneficial insects.
