Description
Snapdragons (Antirrhinum majus) are classic cottage garden favourites, admired for their bold vertical spikes of uniquely shaped flowers that open like little dragon jaws when gently pressed. The ‘Tall Magenta’ variety produces richly coloured magenta blooms, creating a vibrant contrast in borders, cottage beds, and cut flower arrangements.
Native to the Mediterranean, snapdragons thrive in sunny spots with free-draining soil. They are hardy annuals (sometimes short-lived perennials in mild climates), flowering prolifically from spring through autumn. Regular deadheading prolongs the display, while taller types benefit from staking for upright strength.
Pollinator-friendly, snapdragons attract bumblebees and butterflies, adding life and movement to the garden. The flowers are sometimes used decoratively in salads and cakes, though their flavour is not particularly pleasant and they are generally considered an ornamental edible rather than a culinary herb.
With their rich colour, unique form, and long vase life, snapdragons are as charming in a bouquet as they are in the garden—true nostalgic blooms that bring cottage style and pollinator joy.
