Columbine (Aquilegia spp.) are graceful cottage garden perennials with nodding, spurred flowers in a wide range of colours. Growing 40–80 cm, they thrive in part-shade to sun and free-draining soil. A Cottage Garden Flower, Bee & Butterfly plant, and Cut Flower.

Description

Aquilegia, commonly known as Columbine, is a classic old-world flower beloved for its delicate, nodding blooms that come in shades of blue, purple, pink, red, white, and bicolours. Each flower has elegant backward spurs, giving them a whimsical, fairy-tale quality. Flowering in late spring to early summer, they add a burst of colour just as tulips and daffodils fade.

These hardy perennials grow happily in sun or partial shade, preferring fertile, well-drained soil. They often self-seed gently around the garden, creating natural drifts of varied colours and forms without becoming invasive. Their ferny, blue-green foliage adds texture to borders even after flowering.

Aquilegia is highly attractive to bees, butterflies, and especially long-tongued pollinators, making it a wildlife-friendly choice. The flowers are also excellent for cutting, lasting well in arrangements.

Historically, Columbine was associated with love, courage, and even used in traditional remedies, though today it is grown primarily as an ornamental. Some species are mildly toxic and are not considered edible.

Aquilegia brings old-fashioned charm, pollinator joy, and soft colour to the cottage garden. Planting mixed colours ensures a long-lasting, ever-changing display that feels both nostalgic and magical.
