Description
Arnica is a well-known traditional healing herb, valued for its golden, daisy-like flowers that bloom in summer. Long used in herbal medicine, Arnica is most famous for its role in soothing bruises, sprains, and sore muscles when applied topically (never taken internally without professional guidance). The flowers are infused into oils, balms, or tinctures for external use.
The plants grow 30–60 cm tall, with clumps of soft green leaves and cheerful yellow flowers that also attract bees and pollinators. Arnica prefers a sunny position and well-drained, slightly acidic soil. It is hardy and perennial, though can be slow to establish, and benefits from a cool-temperate climate.
Both Arnica montana (the traditional European species) and Arnica chamissonis (a North American species) are cultivated for their medicinal flowers. They are very similar in growth and use, and both are grown here in our nursery. While we cannot guarantee which species each plant is, they are functionally the same for the home apothecary.
⚠️ Note: Arnica is for external use only. Internal use is not recommended except under professional supervision.
Arnica is an essential addition to a home healing garden, combining bright beauty with time-honoured medicinal value.
