Description
Astragalus (Astragalus membranaceus), also known as Huang Qi or Milk Vetch, is a perennial herb in the Fabaceae (pea) family, native to northern China and Mongolia. It grows as a bushy, upright plant with compound green leaves and inconspicuous yellow flowers in late spring to summer. The roots are the primary part used in herbal medicine, traditionally harvested after 3–4 years for maximum potency. Astragalus is highly valued as an adaptogenic tonic, supporting immune health, vitality, and resistance to stress. It thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained, moderately fertile soil. In New Zealand climates, it is frost-hardy once established and can be grown in garden beds or large containers.
