An evergreen PERENNIAL shrub growing to 50cm. Prefers well-drained soil in full sun or semi-shade, and can grow in nutritionally poor soil and can tolerate drought.
It is a beautiful blue-green shrublet with leaves that inspired the suit of clubs in playing cards. Leaves can be eaten and it has a long history of use as a domestic remedy, but is slightly toxic and should only ever be used under medical supervision.

Description

Leaves are edible raw or used as a seasoning, but is very strongly aromatic and not to everyone’s taste, and it is also slightly toxic, so should only be used in very small quantities.
It is medicinally valued for its strenghtening action on the eyes. The whole herb is slightly toxic, abortifacient, anthelmintic, antidote, antispasmodic, carminative, emetic, emmenagogue, expectorant, haemostatic, ophthalmic, rubefacient, strongly stimulant, mildly stomachic and uterotonic.
The growing or dried plant is used to repel insects. Good companion with roses and raspberries.
The dried herb repel moths from clothes and linen. It is said to repel cats.
A red dye is obtained from the plant
