Shoofly is an ANNUAL flowering plant in the nightshade family growing to 1m tall with vigorous spreading branches and ovate, mid-green toothed and wavy leaves. The flowers are bell-shaped, pale violet with white throats and calyxes that resemble that of physalis species.
It has some references to being edible and medicinal, although most texts refer to it as highly toxic. Do not eat. The sap can be used, mixed with milk, as a bait for house fly and blowfly. A decoction has been used to treat headlice.
