Cardoon
$10.50A large PERENNIAL growing to 2m with at least a 1m spread. Cardoon is a thistle-like plant in the sunflower family and grows to be a stout plant with large, deeply lobed and heavily spined green to grey-green leaves. Flowers are violet-purple, produced in a large, globose, massively spined flowerhead.
It can grow in heavy clay and nutritionally poor soil although it prefers well-drained soil in full sun. Somewhat drought tolerant it can grow in saline soil.
Flowers, leaves, roots and stems are eaten. Flower buds are eaten as a globe artichoke substitute. Some important medicinal use, and can be used as a dye plant. -

Crosnes – Chinese Artichokes
$9.50Crosnes (Stachys affinis) is a hardy perennial in the mint family (Lamiaceae) that grows to around 30–45 cm tall and spreads 30–60 cm. It prefers full sun to light shade and thrives in loose, fertile, well-drained soil with consistent moisture. This clumping plant is best known for its curious, spiralled white tubers, harvested in autumn–winter. Crosnes is mainly grown as a Culinary Herb/Vegetable, valued for its nutty, artichoke-like flavour and crisp texture. It also holds cottage-garden appeal with its mint-like leaves and small purple flowers that attract bees and other pollinators. In New Zealand, it is hardy, tolerating frosts well, but tubers should be harvested or mulched to avoid rot in heavy winter soils.

Earth Gem – Ulluco
$9.50Ulluco (Ullucus tuberosus) is a tender perennial root crop in the Basellaceae family, grown as an annual in New Zealand. It grows to about 30–45cm tall and wide, forming mats of fleshy leaves. It prefers full sun to part shade and thrives in moist, well-drained, fertile soil. Ulluco is prized for its colourful, nutty-flavoured tubers, which are used as a culinary crop and harvested in late autumn. The leaves are also edible when cooked. Protect from hot, dry conditions; best suited to cooler NZ regions.

Fennel – Florence
$7.50An EVERGREEN PERENNIAL growing to 1.5m with beautiful fine feathery green and light-green leaves, and umbels of yellow flowers. Florence Fennel is known and sought after for its swollen stem base. Prefers well-drained soil and a full sun position. I can tolerate some drought and strong winds.
All parts of the plant is edible – leaves, stems, root and seed. It is widely used as a domestic herbal medicine for various complaints. -
Horseradish
$10.50A PERENNIAL of the mustard family growing to 70cm. Prefers a moist and well-drained soil and can grow in very alkaline soils. Full sun or semi-shade.
The young leaves are distinctly different to older leaves, being asymettric spiky before becoming flat and broad.
The plant is cultivated mostly for its large, white, tapered root which is a vegetable and spice. It has medicinal use. -

Mashua – Tuberous Nasturtium

Miner’s Lettuce
$7.50A rosette-forming ANNUAL growing to 40cm Flowers are grouped 540 together above a pair of leaves that are united together around the stem to appear as one circular leaf. Prefers cool, damp conditions in a semi-shade to shade position.
The leaves are bland-tasting, and succulent, rich in vitamin C and eaten raw in salads. -

Mustard – Red Giant
$6.50An ANNUAL with very large red/purple toned leaves and a sharp mustardy taste. Prefers full sun or semi-shade in a moist but well-drained soil. It makes a delicious addition to salads and sandwhiches, or added to sauerkraut or pickled on its own. The leaves can be cooked as a pot vegetable.

Nine Star Broccoli (Perennial)
